CSI EBO Presidents Message February 2017

Dear East Bay Oakland Chapter Members,

It is not too late to sign up for our February meeting. Come by and meet with your fellow chapter members, enjoy a nice meal at Scott’s and be enlightened by our program, https://conta.cc/2kvyUQG

Chapter Update: Your chapter board continues to work on improving services for you. We are bringing more value in technical information, professional development and networking opportunities to you. We need your help as well, to make the chapter successful. Please consider attending and supporting chapter events, and provide the board with feedback so we can help each other. We will be increasing our outreach to you, to build on the successes we have achieved recently.

Membership: I am proud to say that our chapter membership continues to increase this year.  We have added 17 new members in the last six months. Thanks to all for your support of the chapter.  Here are our newest members:

Building Code Update:  Last month, the chapter sent out an important message on new California Building Code Regulations regarding exterior elevated elements in buildings.  See the message here.

February Meeting: Our February 21st meeting at Scott’s, will feature Adam Marcus AIA. Adam is an Associate Professor of Architecture at California College of the Arts and the Director of Variable Projects, an award-winning design and research office. Adam will speak about his work exploring how new technologies can interface with longstanding architectural traditions of craft, materiality, ornament and pattern.  For more information and registration, go to; https://conta.cc/2kvyUQG

March Meeting: On March 21st at Scott’s, Christine Diosdado, Project Manager, Simpson Gumpertz & Heger, will talk about Design and Investigation of Artificial Turf Fields for Athletic Play. Natural grass sports fields cannot remain lush and resilient throughout the year.  This fact has prompted many sports programs to specify artificial turf fields. Come hear Christine talk about the pros and cons of artificial turf fields and the results of her research.

April Education Symposium: At our Education Symposium on April 21st you will be able to hear the latest on the new building code regulations and what it means to our design and construction community, as well as other topics related to detailing of building envelope assemblies, please join us, see more information on our website https://eastbay.csinet.org/Stay-Informed/Save-The-Date-Design-Detail-Disasters-April-2017-PDF.pdf.  Your feedback from previous education seminars asked for more information on how to detail successful waterproofing assemblies.

April Meeting: Planning efforts continue for our April 20th joint meeting with ASCE, the topic will be the Port of Oakland Army Base and other Port projects. The POAB project has been underway for years now, with major infrastructure improvements involving roads, utilities, rail, trucking and warehousing, to support future growth of the Port. Thanh Vuong, Port Supervising Engineer, will give us an update on the projects.

See our Program list for the year at https://eastbay.csinet.org/Stay-Informed/CSI-EBO-Upcoming-Events-List-2016-17-DOC.pdf .

Website Upgrade: You will soon see a new chapter website. Earlier this year CSI introduced a new website, www.CSIResources.org.. If you have not visited the site yet, you should do so and update your CSI membership profile. The chapter is in the process of planning a new website and will decide soon on expenditure of funds to build the new site. If you have any thoughts on what you would like to see on the new website, please let me know.

Certification:  The chapter is holding Construction Document Technologist (CDT) and Certified Construction Specifier (CCS) study groups for the Spring 2017 Exam. Contact me if you are interested in joining us.

Thanks for your support of the East Bay Oakland Chapter, hope to see you soon.
